The Sudarshana Chakra, a divine and powerful cosmic weapon, embodies the righteous intent and spiritual authority of Lord Vishnu in his quest to defeat evil forces.
Characters in the story:
Lord Shiva: Lord Shiva holds significant prominence in Hinduism as a prominent deity, revered for his role as the vanquisher of malevolence and the catalyst of universal change. Depicted in various forms, he is often portrayed as a tranquil ascetic engaged in deep meditation or as the divine dancer, adorned with a third eye, an entwined serpent around his neck, and a trident grasped firmly in his hand.
Lord Vishnu: Lord Vishnu is one of the three major deities in Hinduism, known as the preserver of the universe and the protector of dharma (righteousness). He is often depicted with four arms holding a conch shell, a discus, a mace, and a lotus flower.
Lord Krishna: Lord Krishna is one of the most popular and revered deities in Hinduism. He is worshiped as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and is known for his divine teachings in the Bhagavad Gita and for his role in the epic Mahabharata.
Viswakarma: Viswakarma is considered the divine architect and craftsman of the gods. He is revered as the master of all machinery, tools, and engineering techniques, and is believed to have built celestial palaces and weapons for the gods.
The term Sudarshana is a combination of two Sanskrit words, ‘Su’ meaning good or divine, and ‘Darshana’ meaning vision. It symbolizes the righteous intention of the soul and aims to fulfill it. Sudarshana Chakra is the cosmic weapon of Lord Vishnu, the Supreme Godhead.
According to belief, Lord Shiva presented the Sudarshana Chakra to Lord Vishnu as a recognition of His devotion. The legend goes that when the asuras (demons) were causing immense suffering to the Gods, Lord Vishnu was approached for a solution. Despite his own power being insufficient, he decided to seek the assistance of Lord Shiva. Thus, he embarked on a journey to meet hm.
Upon reaching Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu found him deeply immersed in meditation. Out of respect, Lord Vishnu refrained from disturbing his trance and patiently waited, earnestly praying to Lord Shiva. Days turned into years as Lord Vishnu meditated upon Lord Shiva, continuously chanting his name and offering a thousand lotus blossoms each day as an act of devotion.
Meanwhile, the evil attacks by the asuras against the Gods persisted. Lord Vishnu felt powerless in the face of these circumstances, unable to interrupt Lord Shiva’s meditation. However, his patience and efforts eventually paid off when, one day, Lord Shiva finally opened his eyes. Lord Vishnu was filled with joy and gratitude. He continued offering a thousand lotus blossoms to Lord Shiva but realized that he was one short.
Unknown to Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva had hidden one flower to test his devotion. Without hesitation, Lord Vishnu plucked out one of his own eyes and offered it in place of the missing flower.
Overwhelmed by Lord Vishnu’s devotion, Lord Shiva granted him the boon to ask for anything he desired.
Lord Vishnu humbly requested a weapon to defeat the asuras, and in response, Lord Shiva bestowed upon him the Sudarshana Chakra, assuring him that it possessed the power to vanquish all enemies.
Another legend associated with the Sudarshana Chakra tells the story of Viswakarma, the architect of the Gods, who diminished the radiance of Surya, the Sun God. Viswakarma’s daughter was married to Surya but couldn’t approach him due to the intense brilliance and heat emanating from him.
To reduce the Sun’s intensity, Viswakarma enclosed Surya in a cage and churned him, resulting in Sun dust. From this dust, Vishvakarma created several powerful golden objects, including the Sudarshana Chakra. Other weapons created were Trishoola and Shakthi, which respectively belonged to Lord Vishnu, Shiva, and Subrahamnya. Lord Vishnu, holding the Sudarshana Chakra, is worshiped as Chakrathazhwar, the Sage of the wheel.
When Lord Krishna incarnated, Vishnu entrusted him with the Sudarshana Chakra, which became his personal possession, usable at any time. Krishna employed the chakra to humble the demons Jagai and Madhaihe, while during the churning of the cosmic ocean, Lord Vishnu employed the Sudarshan Chakra to sever the demon Swarbanu, who then transformed into Rahu and Ketu.
The Sudarshana Chakra, divine and all-powerful, is not an ordinary weapon. It is projected through the power of the mind and propelled towards the enemy with willpower. The chakra has a circular shape with arrow-like spikes encircling its frame. It is more than a mere physical instrument; it possesses the immense spiritual authority to eliminate anything that obstructs its intended purpose. With tremendous occult and spiritual power, it spins rapidly once launched by the mind and does not return until the task is accomplished or until the one who sent it wills its return.
In addition to its destructive capabilities against evil forces, the Sudarshana Chakra is associated with noble attributes such as knowledge, stability, and transcending worldly existence (samsara). It upholds righteousness and serves as a symbol of divine vision.
Invoke the goodness of the Sudarshana Chakra by rendition of the Sudarshana Gayatri Mantra:
Om Sudarshanaya Vidmahe Maha Jwalaya Dhimahi, Tanno Chakrah Prachodayat.
