Characters in the story:
Hanuman: Hanuman is a revered deity in Hinduism, known for his unwavering devotion to Lord Rama and his incredible strength, symbolizing courage, loyalty, and selflessness.
Lord Krishna: Lord Krishna is one of the most popular and revered deities in Hinduism. He is worshiped as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu and is known for his divine teachings in the Bhagavad Gita and for his role in the epic Mahabharata.
Sudarshana Chakra: Sudarshana Chakra is a divine discus, attributed to Vishnu in the Hindu scriptures. It is generally portrayed on the right rear hand of the four hands of Vishnu. It is also stated to be Vishnu’s symbol of the wheel of time. The discus later emerged as an ayudhapurusha (an anthropomorphic form), a fierce form of Vishnu, used for the destruction of demons.
In the Dwapara Yuga, many items and beings associated with Vishnu had become arrogant. To humble his attendants, Krishna sought the help of Hanuman. The tale of Hanuman swallowing the Sudarshana Chakra illustrates this effort.
Hanuman was in deep meditation in the Himalayas, unaware that the Treta Yuga had ended and the Dwapara Yuga had begun. He also did not know about Krishna’s avatar, as he was constantly meditating on Rama.
Krishna sent Garuda to deliver a message to Hanuman. When Garuda arrived and conveyed Krishna’s request for a meeting, Hanuman ignored him and asked him to leave. Despite his annoyance, Garuda repeated the request, but Hanuman again refused, insisting on continuing his meditation on Rama.
Upset, Garuda returned to Krishna and narrated how Hanuman had ignored his request. Krishna smiled and instructed Garuda to tell Hanuman that Rama was calling him. Reluctantly, Garuda returned and relayed Krishna’s exact words. Upon hearing this, Hanuman was overjoyed and immediately flew to Dwarka at full speed.
At Dwarka, Krishna had assigned Sudarshana Chakra to guard the main gate, anticipating an important guest. Sudarshana Chakra, proud of his strength, believed he was invincible.
When Hanuman arrived at Dwarka, Sudarshana Chakra stopped him. Hanuman explained that he had been summoned by Rama. Sudarshana Chakra insisted there was no Rama there. Not wanting to waste time in arguments, Hanuman grabbed Sudarshana Chakra and swallowed it.
Soon, Krishna and Satyabhama appeared before Hanuman as Rama and Sita. Overjoyed, Hanuman prostrated himself before them.
Krishna asked Hanuman if anyone had tried to stop him from entering the palace. Hanuman replied that a metallic discus had tried to block his way, so he swallowed it in his haste.
Hanuman then spat out Sudarshana Chakra, who realized his mistake and never again prided himself on his strength or his association with Vishnu.
Realizing his mistake after being swallowed by Hanuman, the Sudarshana Chakra was humbled and never again prided himself on his strength. This tale highlights the importance of humility and devotion in the service of the divine.
