The origin story of Lord Vishnu's name Srinivasa is linked to the event of the Samudra Manthan. Read how Lakshmi, one of the treasures to emerge from the ocean after the churning, chose Vishnu, which led to Him being given this name.
Characters in the story:
Lord Vishnu: Lord Vishnu is one of the three major deities in Hinduism, known as the preserver of the universe and the protector of dharma (righteousness). He is often depicted with four arms holding a conch shell, a discus, a mace, and a lotus flower.
Goddess Lakshmi: Goddess Lakshmi is associated with wealth, prosperity, and fortune. She is often depicted with four arms holding lotus flowers and other symbols of wealth and abundance.
One of the many names of Lord Vishnu is Srinivasa. Vishnu received this name following the famous event of the Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the ocean, as described in the Puranas. During this cosmic event, several precious treasures emerged, among them Goddess Lakshmi, also known as Shri, the embodiment of prosperity.
The Devas (demigods) and Asuras (demons) divided the various treasures that appeared, with the Devas claiming the elephant and the Asuras taking the horse. However, neither side showed interest in Shri, despite her association with prosperity, as they recognized the great responsibilities that accompany her blessings.
Vishnu, on the other hand, desired nothing for himself. Impressed by His detachment, Goddess Lakshmi chose Him as her eternal consort.
Vishnu then placed Goddess Lakshmi on His chest, and because Shri now resided there, He became known as Srinivasa. The mark of Goddess Lakshmi on Vishnu’s chest is called Shrivatsa.
In the end, Vishnu’s humility and detachment impressed Goddess Lakshmi, who chose Him as her eternal consort. With Lakshmi residing on His chest, Vishnu symbolizes the union of divine prosperity and responsibility.
