The war was raging on, and tensions were running high. Duryodhana, the leader of the Kaurava army, was growing increasingly frustrated with Bhishma, their powerful commander. He believed that Bhishma was not fully committed to their cause and was secretly helping their enemies, the Pandavas. Fueled by anger and desperation, Duryodhana confronted Bhishma and demanded that he prove his loyalty by giving him a weapon capable of defeating the Pandavas.
Bhishma, a respected warrior and renowned for his devotion to duty, was taken aback by Duryodhana’s accusations. In an effort to prove his loyalty, he took five arrows from his quiver and infused them with his life force and years of penance. He handed them over to Duryodhana, assuring him that they were powerful enough to bring an end to the war and secure victory for the Kauravas.
Duryodhana eagerly accepted the arrows, confident that he finally had the ultimate weapon to defeat the Pandavas. However, his excitement was short-lived when Lord Krishna, the Pandava’s ally, learned of the powerful weapon and quickly devised a plan to thwart it.
Krishna instructed Arjuna, one of the Pandavas’ greatest warriors, to retrieve the arrows from Duryodhana. In a daring move, Arjuna snuck into the Kaurava camp and asked for the arrows as a boon from Duryodhana, reminding him of a past debt owed to him.
The boon given to Arjuna by Duryodhana was the result of a past debt owed by the Kaurava prince. In a previous encounter, Duryodhana had been captured by Gandharva soldiers, and Arjuna, who was passing by, had come to his rescue. Arjuna had spared Duryodhana’s life, despite him being an enemy, and had let him go free. Duryodhana, grateful for this act of mercy, had promised Arjuna that he could ask for any boon at any time.
Arjuna, being a true warrior and a man of his word, had never asked for anything until the moment he requested the five arrows. And, true to his word, Duryodhana reluctantly handed over the arrows to Arjuna.
Realizing his mistake, Duryodhana begged Bhishma to create another set of arrows for him, but Bhishma explained that it was impossible to recreate them. Instead, he promised to fight with his full heart and soul for the Kaurava cause. The impact of this story is clear – loyalty and devotion cannot be forced or bought, and true warriors stand by their word and their people until the very end.
This exchange of boons was a reflection of the warrior code of honor, where loyalty, respect, and gratitude were highly valued. Arjuna’s request for the arrows was not out of malice but rather a strategic move to prevent the Kauravas from gaining an unfair advantage in the war. In turn, Duryodhana honored his debt to Arjuna by giving him what he had requested, even though it meant giving up a weapon that could have potentially won the war for him.
