Desperate for assistance, Ravana turned to his brother Ahiravana, the ruler of the underworld known as Patala. News of this treacherous alliance reached Vibhishana, who promptly raced to inform Rama and Laxmana of the impending danger.

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Vibhishana instructed the ever-vigilant Hanuman to guard the abode where Rama and Laxmana resided. Hanuman diligently stood his ground, ensuring no intruder could breach their sanctuary. Ahiravana made numerous attempts to infiltrate the premises, but each effort was thwarted by the unwavering Hanuman.

Determined to succeed, Ahiravana devised a plan to disguise himself as Vibhishana. Hanuman, unable to discern the imposter, unwittingly granted him access to the chamber where Rama and Laxmana rested. Once inside, Ahiravana swiftly seized the two noble princes and spirited them away to the depths of the underworld.

Upon learning of this calamity, Hanuman swiftly sought out Vibhishana, urgently relaying the distressing news. Vibhishana implored Hanuman to rescue Rama and Laxmana with all haste, warning that Ahiravana intended to sacrifice them in a dark ritual.

As Hanuman arrived at the gates of Patala, a peculiar creature confronted him, its body half-vanara (monkey) and half-reptile. This creature was the guardian of the door, and he introduced himself as Makardhwaja, claiming to be Hanuman’s son. This revelation puzzled Hanuman, for he had led a chaste and celibate life.

Makardhwaja proceeded to recount a truly extraordinary tale. He explained that when Anjani Putra, Hanuman, had leaped across the ocean, a drop of his semen had inadvertently fallen into the mouth of a crocodile. And thus, Makardhwaja was born—a being of both monkey and reptile.
